What to do if you find a pet
- Secure the pet. Keep the animal in your garage, basement, backyard (if fenced), or in the house. If you are unable to confine the animal, call Jackson County Animal Control at (517) 788-4464.
- If the animal is wearing a collar with ID tags or a nameplate, contact the owner immediately. (Keep in mind that animals with long fur can have tags hidden from view.)
- If you cannot contact the owner or if the animal has no ID tags, call Animal Control at (517) 788-4464 to file a report. You can ask their office to pick up animals. You can also drop off strays there. Also call Cascades Humane Society at (517) 788-6587 or email adopt@chspets.org to file a report. CHS does not pick up animals.
- Place a "Found" ad in your local newspaper (there may be a charge). Check the lost/found section in the paper every day.
- Put signs in the area where the dog was found, including schools and veterinary clinics.
- If you cannot hold the animal and are unable to transport it to a shelter, call Animal Control and an Officer will pick it up as soon as one is available. This applies to dogs only. There will be a pick-up charge for cats.
- If you find the owner after making a report with Cascades Humane Society and Animal Control, please let both groups know.
